Nyong Essien

Nyong Essien Akpan Efio-Iwat Effembe Ebit Akpan Amaide Oku (9 November 1872 – 15 October 1976) was a traditional ruler, teacher, and retired civil servant in Nigeria.

He was the first representative of Old Calabar Province in the Legislative Council in Lagos and the first president of the Eastern Regional House of Chiefs in Nigeria's Eastern Region. He was also the first installed president of the Ibibio Union, the first officially recognized paramount ruler of Uyo, and the first nsom of Uruan.

Chief Nyong Essien was one of the pillars of Nigerian nationalism. He was one of the prime architects and negotiators of Nigeria's independence. He intellectually fought for the enhancement of the traditional institutions of his people, and he was known for his opposition to corruption.
