The dirac (see Baati for the house dress) is a Somali garment worn by Somali women that is long, usually ankle length. The Dirac was designed for the harsh hot weather of Somalia hence its name which comes from the Somali term which means "Protector" or "Protection" and is also a popular boys name "diric" (protector) ,like in Sayid Mohammed Abdulle Hassan's infamous mobilization poem against the British: "Waaka fircoon so dareersaday diracyadiisiye" which translate as " See the Pharaoh calling upon his protectors!
