Open primary elections were held in Bulgaria in 1996 to determine the joint presidential candidate for SDS, BZNSDP and DPS, the three largest parliamentary opposition coalitions, which would merge into ODS the following month, ahead of the upcoming 1996 presidential election. Incumbent president Zhelyu Zhelev was eligible and ran for a second term in office. He was defeated by Petar Stoyanov, who went on to defeat Ivan Marazov in the presidential election.
